This outline by Dr. Falls refers to individuals who have addiction issues in addition to psychiatric disorders.
The wide spread use of alcohol and other substances is associated with a number of negative consequences, including personal relationship problems, interference with work or school, health and legal problems. Despite the profound effects of substance abuse on some people, their impact on persons with mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, has often been overlooked. When substance abuse is correctly identified by treatment providers, its effects on the course of psychiatric disorders are often misunderstood. To make matters worse, ineffective treatments such  as being confrontational confounds the treatment approach provided to clients with dual diagnosis.
In order to treat clients with dual disorders effectively, and therefore improve long-term prognosis, clinicians need to be familiar with current knowledge about substance use in the psychiatric population.
Motivational approach
Motivation is a commonly used word that each person attaches his or her own meaning to. Motivation is not something that someone has, but it is something that someone does. It involves recognizing a problem, finding a way to change and sticking to that change plan.
AIM - To establish goals that are genuinely personal and meaningful we can help the individual to increase willingness to work toward them.
Cognitive-Behavioral Approach
Cognitive behaviour is a general approach to help the individual to overcome problems and make progress toward personal goals. This is based on principles used to learn new and more effective skills for improving health, self-care, and self-regulation. This includes anticipating, preparing for, and managing stress; behaving more effectively in social situations, and coping with unpleasant thoughts and feelings.
Cognitive behaviour can be incorporated into individual, group, and family formats.

The importance of family collaboration
It's important to recognize that in particular, people with serious mental illness, families play an important role in their lives, although, in some cases family contacts are no longer possible. Families can buffer the effects of stress of these clients, whereas the loss of family support can have devastating effects on their lives and the progression of their disorder.
